About the course

During the course the audience will get acquainted with ways in which research data are prepared for storage, archived and reused. After the course the students understand the meaning of research data in scientific research and are able to advise researchers effectively and efficiently in adding value to their data.

The premise of the course is that supporting researchers in data curation is teamwork. A team of professionals who have insight in each other's knowlegde and experience, thereby enabling them to give their clients the best of support.

"Creating a sense of capability
is more productive than stressing
a sense of urgency"

Steve Hitchcock

The course "Data Intelligence 4 Librarians" is designed and built as a combination of online and face to face education. Apart from acquiring knowlegde, sharing knowledge and experiences is key. There are four meetings. In between meetings you can work your way through the theory and you will work (in pairs) on assignments. The first assignment is available in "Mapping Actual Topics". The remainder of the assignments will be provided by your trainer/coach during the course.

  1. At the first meeting you will meet your fellow students and your trainer/coach. You will learn about the structure of the course and the learning environment where you will work (together) on assignments. In between meetings you can get feedback from your classmates and your trainer (gplus.to/datalibrian).
After this introduction your trainer will give you a quick overview of the module Data Management (KNOW-HOW). At the end of the day the assigment Mapping Actual Topics will be exemplified. In between meeting 1 and 2 you will work on this assignment (ACT).

  2. At the second day of the course you will present the results of your assigment to your fellow students (SHARE). What are your conclusions? What do your classmates think? Do their assignments and feedback have added value for you? (REFLECT) Afther the demonstrations and discussions your trainer introduces you in the module Technical Skills, followed by a demonstration of 3TU.Databrowser. We will subsequently practice hands-on (KNOW-HOW). You will get an assignment which you can finish in between meetings 2 and 3 (ACT).

  3. During meeting 3 we will share the results of the assignments (SHARE & REFLECT). Your trainer will introduce you into the module Acquisition and Advice (KNOW-HOW), followed by practicing hands-on with conservational barriers and how they can be overcome.  The assignment for the fourth and last module will be exemplified. You will complete this assignment in pairs in between meeting 3 and 4 (ACT).

  4. The fourth and last meeting will have a spotlight on the assignments and the possible follow-up actions for after the course. Then we will evaluate the course. Did it meet your expectations? How can we make it better for future students? (SHARE & REFLECT) The day will finish with the handing out of the certificate which states you have succesfully followed the course "Data Intelligence 4 Librarians".

The first three meetings are from 11:00 to 16:00, the last one is from 11:00 to 14:30.
